We Didn’t Start With Much—But We Started With Fire

Mpume comes from the township of Lamontville in Durban. Saskia comes from Lavender Hill on the Cape Flats. Two different places, yet the same story in many ways.

We did not grow up around entrepreneurship and we did not have access to rooms where strategy was casually discussed over tea or where generational wealth softened the edges of risk. What we did have was something far less visible but far more powerful. We had mothers who carried worlds on their backs. They were single mothers, women who made a plan where there was none and women who held homes together with faith, grit and an unspoken agreement with life that said, “No matter what, my children will keep going.” Because of them, we did.

Entrepreneurship Is Not Just Business—It’s Survival, It’s Spirit

People often talk about entrepreneurship as though it is simply a career path. For us, it was never just that. It was a calling wrapped in pressure, a dream tied to responsibility and a deep knowing that we were building something bigger than ourselves while still figuring out how to make it to the next day. The truth is that when you come from where we come from, you are not just managing a business; you are managing life. You are thinking about your next move and your next meal while building vision and figuring out where money for basics, like sanitary towels, will come from. At the same time, you are holding your ambition in one hand and your reality in the other, constantly negotiating between the two.

That kind of pressure does something to you. It forces you to grow up fast, to think strategically and to move with urgency. However, it also asks something deeper of you: zest, a relentless and almost unreasonable zest for life that says, “Even here. Even now. I choose to believe in more.”

The Matriarchs Who Built Us

We come from powerful matriarchies and that comes with both strength and complexity. We were raised by women who had to survive, women who did not always have the luxury of softness and women who led with resilience, discipline and often a kind of necessary hardness. Naturally, we inherited that approach to life. We tackled the world the same way, entered business the same way and led the same way: driven, structured, protective and sometimes even guarded. That “masculine” way of doing things, of pushing, achieving and surviving, served us and helped us reach this point. At some stage, however, we realised something important: that way of leading could build, but it could not always sustain.

Learning to Lead From the Feminine

There came a moment, and in truth many moments, when we had to pause and ask who we were beneath the survival. We also began asking what would happen if we allowed softness, intuition and creativity to lead.

The truth is that you cannot build something deeply impactful if you are constantly operating from survival mode. Before the strategy, before the scaling and before the next big move, there has to be healing. That healing includes healing the urgency, healing the fear of not having enough and healing the belief that everything rests on your shoulders alone. We had to create safety within ourselves so that our feminine could rise, allowing the part of us that creates, feels, connects and leads not only with logic but also with truth to take its rightful place. That shift changed everything.

The Power of a Purpose Partnership

One of the greatest gifts in this journey has been finding each other. Doing this work alone is heavy, but together we have learned to lead softer, to hold space for each other and to remind one another who we are when things get hard. When one is tired, the other carries. When one doubts, the other reflects truth. When the world feels loud, we return to alignment together. That is the power of a purpose partner. A purpose partner is not only someone who builds with you but someone who sees you, understands the weight behind your ambition and knows what it means to rise from nothing and still choose to dream.

And If You Don’t Have That Yet…

We see you because we have been you. We know what it feels like to start with nothing, to hold a vision that no one around you fully understands and to carry both hope and pressure in the same breath. That is why we created Leaders Lounge. It is a space where you do not have to do this alone, a space where your story is understood rather than explained and a space where you can be supported as you build, heal and lead. Leadership is not just about what you create in the world; it is also about who you become in the process.

We Didn’t Start With Much—But We Started With Enough

We had enough courage to try, enough faith to continue and enough fire to keep choosing the dream. One thing we know for sure is this: you do not need perfect conditions to begin. You simply need to start with what you have, from where you are and trust that everything you have come through has already prepared you for what comes next.

Let’s build. Together.

With love,
from your friends at Hucklberry – always.
